There are three main forms of competitive clay pigeon shooting, and they include trap shooting, skeet shooting and sporting clays. Each one is a sport unto itself with its own rules, regulations, associations, competitions and equipment.

Trap shooting has been a popular sport since 1793 when real birds were used as targets. Eventually fake birds were introduced. In modern trap shooting, the shooters move through five different positions and shoot at released traps.

Skeet shooting is both a recreational and competitive sport whereby sharpshooters try to break clay disks flung into the sky from various angles. Most sharpshooters use a double-barreled over and under shotgun for this sport. These guns are often sold as “skeet guns.” Use Canada 411 to find a gun dealer in your area.

Sporting clays is often referred to as “golf with a shotgun,” because the average course involves 10 to 15 different stations from which to shoot. These stations are spread over an area less than 35 acres in size. This sport simulates the sport of shooting live targets. Sport clay shooting involves shooting at different angles, speeds, elevations, distances, trajectories and at targets of differing sizes.

These three forms of sharpshooting are very popular in Canada. In Canada, Susan Nattrass is a trapshooting superstar who recently won a gold medal at an international competition for women trapshooters in Brazil. She was also given the prestigious position of carrying the Canadian flag in the upcoming summer Olympics, in which she’ll be competing. Like many other talented Canadians, Nattrass is keeping the sport of sharpshooting alive and well.

The first thing to know about owning a gun is that it requires maturity and a deep sense of responsibility. Just because you’ve seen the gun fired in a movie doesn’t mean that’s what it’s like to fire one. Before you buy a gun there are a few things you need to do.

Handgun Safety Course

If you’ve never owned a gun, then it is extremely important that you take a gun safety course. You need to know the laws, the proper way to handle a gun, how to clean it, how to store it, and how to fire it.  A qualified instructor needs to teach you. That is the only way to do it. Guns kill if they fall into irresponsible hands. Someone who is inexperienced can make a fatal mistake. Don’t be that someone.

Fire A Variety of Guns Before You Choose

You may discover that a .45 is not right for you. It has a pretty heavy kick, and it is big. Some of the more expensive ones, like the Smith and Wesson M&P, come with interchangeable grips so that you can fit it to your hand size, but not all guns have this feature. Therefore, a 9mm, .38 or even .22 may be better for you.

Practice Shooting

Find a reputable shooting range to target practice. If you can’t practice, don’t get a gun. You need to know how to use it, and you need to feel confident when firing it. Safety always comes first.

Safety is often a maligned word. It sparks thoughts of dull hours and too tedious procedures — all of which are sure to ruin the thrill of shooting. The precautions needed for guns are thought to be useless: demanding time but offering no compensations.

This is not true.

Safety is instead necessary within the world of shooting. No game can be attempted, after all, without a collection of rules. And the rules involved here provide more than mere victories. They instead ensure survival:

Bullet Assumptions

A gun is more than a favored pastime, a way to relieve stress: it’s instead a weapon, capable of causing damage to all who touch it. It’s essential therefore that all individuals — including you — forever assume that there are bullets in the chamber. This will ensure that equipment is given the caution (and respect) it deserves.

Trigger Avoidance

The trigger is a familiar comfort. It’s also, however, all too easy to overwhelm. Keeping your finger tucked against it is therefore not recommended. While this may offer quicker reaction times during practice, it can also spark complications — with your hand twitching unintentionally and firing the gun. Avoid touching the trigger until you desire to shoot.

Target Awareness

Your aim is not — despite what you claim — perfect. Targets can be missed; bullets can stray; and what waits beyond a practice range can suffer the consequences. You must be aware of your surroundings therefore: noting any potential victims of your shooting attempts. Recognize the possibility of animals, children, vehicles and more appearing suddenly in your sights.

Shooting sports consists of two things speed and accuracy. It means that it needs the quality of accuracy with the touch of speed with it in the player. It is a spirited sport. This sport includes many kinds of air guns and firearms. Hunting is also sometimes considered as shooting sport. Shooting live pigeons was once a sport in the Olympics but after then it was suspended by the authorities. Shooting sport is categorized by the type of weapon used in it. There are air rifles, different types of shotguns, different kinds of mini guns, various types of pistols etc. There are typically three types of power guns like spring piston, air guns, gas ram air guns and pneumatic air guns. In the category of machine guns there are basically electrically powered machine guns, gas powered and spring powered guns. There are various types of equipment for the ease of shooters like holsters, magazines, clips, slings, gun cases, range bags, eye and ear protection, shooters apparels and more. That’s why shooters search a lot for the right combination of their guns, ammunition, and gears. Maintenance of the guns and gears is very important. As equipment there are various types of scopes to see the target clearly and easily. A good scope can help a lot for the sport. It is basically the sport for the hunters to make them more efficient during hunting and make their accuracy much better. It is the right combination of sharp eye, concentration and steady mind. There are many certified institutes which held courses for shooters to master this skill. In this the shooter must be physically fit for the sport, because in this sport the nervousness can cost them the loss of concentration and loss of target. While going on for a shooting sport, one must know about the safety and precautions to be considered before using a gun. The guns basically used for shooting sports are different types of air guns, rifles and sub-machine guns or light machine guns. Air guns are basically meant for near aim shooting skills and are also for beginners at shooting sports while experts also mark them as good shooting devices. In power air guns there are mainly three types involved, they are- spring-piston air guns, gas-ram air guns and pneumatic air guns. Spring piston air guns mainly provide a speed of sound to the pellet, while gas- ram air guns have gas as their springs and the gas beyond the pellet shoots it with more efficiency than the spring piston air guns and the pneumatic air guns. One must have to pump the gas through the piston and make it more compressed thus this shoots the pellet when the trigger is being pushed.

Air gun rifles are also available for the shooting sports as well as the pistols are also there to bring the craze in the sportsmen. Sub-machine guns basically involve the purpose of bird shooting; they come in three classes as the spring powered, gas powered and electrically powered sub-machine guns. Blow back guns and the non-blow back guns are the variants of the gas powered sub-machine guns. Air guns provide the rifles of shooting sports along with rechargeable batteries as they are mainly electrically powered or also come in spring piston variants. Spring piston rifles have a drawback that they are to be reloaded manually after every shot made but the electric powered air guns are not facing this drawback.
